Nature Notes

Spring Will be Several Weeks Late This year

I heard a report on a recent news bulletin that owing to the very prolonged and cold winter we are currently experiencing, Spring will be a month later than usual in bursting forth this year. If this is the case then when it does finally arrive it should be a spectacular sight to see, with everything that normally flowers in a certain order doing so simultaneously. I have Crocuses and Winter Aconites in bud but obviously "on hold" until conditions are right for them to flower. The air and soil temperatures are still very low and until one of those increases, as far as plants are concerned, it is still winter with only the length of daylight giving away the fact that we are more than half way through February. Here is a picture of the Winter Aconites in my garden. They are in bud but feeling nervous about revealing their bright and cheerful yellow flowers.
