Nature Notes

Fly Agaric Mushrooms

Whilst visiting friends staying in Castle Acre, Norfolk, last week, I had the opportunity to visit the nature reserve of Litcham Common a few miles to the east. This small reserve would be home to many forms of wildlife, trees and plants in spring and summer, but it was autumn and very quiet there, the only sounds being a microlite aircraft circling overhead briefly and the slightly melancholic notes of some robins. The picture below was taken with the camera on my mobile phone and produced a reasonably good image of very common and very poisonous Fly Agaric mushrooms, (Amanita muscaria), of which there were many in small troops growing in quite open situations.
