Laurel Flowers

The sweet smell of laurel flowers is now at it's maximum intensity and the pyramid-like flower racemes that accompany the large shiny leaves consist of very small white, nearly half inch cup-shaped flowers with reddish-yellow markings in the centre and five petals. The particular laurel hedge that I can see from my window is about 11-years old and extends for about 20 feet beside a driveway outside my bungalow. As soon as the flowers fade they will be will be replaced with large mauve-coloured fruits. But at the moment the bees and other insects are busy visiting the flowers for the brief period that the nectar from these aromatic blooms is at it's highest.
