The Dramatic Sunflower

Most of the plants in my garden have now finished their flowering season, and it is time to clear away the dead foliage and flowers and collect any seeds that we may want for new plants next year. It is now that the late summer flowering species now begin to display their blooms, and one plant that literally stands head and shoulders above the rest is the sunflower. Some of them, besides being very tall, can also attain a diameter the size of dinnerplates. The name sunflower is very apt, for it becomes our own personal sun that shines in our gardens during the most overcast and rain-filled days of late summer.
