MEERKATS (Suricata suricatta)

These very active diurnal members of the mongoose family presented a bit of a problem to photograph in that a) they were in front of a low wall and slightly below it, meaning that I could not get to the same level as they were, and b) they did not keep still for very long. But my patience was soon rewarded when several of them positioned themselves on a pile of elevated stones and adopted their characteristic "guard duty" pose. I took about 6 pictures of the meerkats doing this and decided that this picture was the best owing to the arrangement of the creatures and the dark relatively uncluttered background.
