February Was Very Cold With Prolonged Overcast Conditions

February 2013 will be remembered not just as being a very cold month but also a very cloudy and overcast one with below average night and daytime temperatures. Half of the month was cloudy or overcast with the last 2 weeks seeing no sunshine at all. Week 3 was very cold with dense fog and heavy frost occurring on the 17th and 18th. The average nigh-time temperature for the month was 0.8C which is 30% below normal (1981-2010 averages). The average daytime temperature was 5.4C., or 26% below normal. Rainfall amounts were also slightly below normal at 38.4mm; most of it falling during the first 10 days of the period, although 12mm on the 14th produced the wettest day of the month.
